The Wingfeather Saga

This series is great to read aloud, fun to think about, and touches on some pretty deep things.

On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness, the first book in the quartet, was inspired by the author's three children, who are the bases of the three main characters. Although the first one is quite good, the series peaks at book three, in my opinion. So hang on, it does get better in the following three books; North! Or Be Eaten, The Monster in the Hollows, and The Warden and The Wolf King.

I have actually seen the author, Andrew Peterson, in person at a homeschool conference in SC. He performed some songs, as he is a musician.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this series, it's one of my favorites.

P. S. The author and a few of his friends have created a short film about around the first chapter of the books, and his daughter Skye (who was the inspiration for his character Leeli) sings a song that is actually in the books, My Love Has Gone Across The Sea, which is one of my favorite songs, and I really suggest you listen to it, youtube link here.
