Six Of Crows
Six Of Crows (and its sequel, Crooked Kingdom) is one of the best books I have ever read. It is set in the Grishaverse, a fictional world created by Leigh Bardugo. There are three series (so far) set in this universe, but in my opinion this is the best.
The story follows six young criminals as they work together on a heist. Each of them have history, and struggle with their pasts, presents, futures. Each of them are unique.
And each of them are trapped.
This book is so emotionally raw, it's hard to write about. The author has a gift for really powerful lines, and it is full of amazing quotes. However, there is also a lot of humor. The mix is very riveting, and difficult to put down.
The world Leigh Bardugo has created is harsh, but wonderfully thought out, with some real-world parallels of varying subtlety. She approaches many real world problems with both tact and a fierce drive that I admire.
But the best part about this series are the characters. They are very diverse, in thousands of ways.
They are tragic and broken and dark. Hurt and angry and flawed.
And they are wonderful.
The way the author balances the pain and weaves it into the story is awe-inspiring. It bleeds through her work, as much a part of the story as the ink itself.
Reading this book is painful, and tense, and inspiring and chilling and a thousand emotions all at once. You hover close to tears, and are pulled back. It is an emotional rollercoaster.
It is really good.
I love this book so much. It is one of my all-time-favorites, and if you can you must read it. You will never forget it, that I promise.
Note: This is a young adult series, and has several inappropriate references. Also, there are many lgbtq characters if that is something that you are uncomfortable with.
