The Borrowers (Calling All Readers)

If you are interested in classics, chances are that you have read this book. You enjoyed it at the time, though you may not remember much.

I recently read it as a possible book club book, and am so glad I did. It has the charm of a fairy tale, but the the way the story is presented, second- and third-hand, is really well done.

The characters are really engaging, and you want them to succeed. Despite how small the setting and cast seems, I got into it as much as I do with massive, epic fantasy series. It is short and sweet.

If you are going on vacation with your family, this would be a great book to grab for the evenings.

The majority of the book is presented as a story told to a girl as she and her mentor are sewing, and Mary Norton did a wonderful job of bringing you back to that at strategic points. The story the mentor tells is a recollection of a story she herself was told as a child. The twisting of the facts, through all the different people the story has passed to, is absolutely fascinating. I think that the main part of the story isn't written down, but rather happens when you think about the book. The premise is fascinating.
